Eleven People Are Dead After Hurricane Agatha Hit Mexico

Mexican President Leopoldo Lopez held a press conference on Monday, Murat via video link to report the damage in Oaxaca. He said that heavy rains brought by Agatha have caused landslides and river flooding in many parts of Oaxaca, killing 11 people and leaving dozens missing, mainly in the coastal areas and mountainous areas of the state. Power outages caused by the storm affected more than 40,000 people in nine cities across the state.

Murat said the local government has set up 240 temporary shelters to help the affected people.

At the conference, Lopez expressed condolences for the victims and hoped the missing would be found soon.

Hurricane Agatha made landfall in the coastal areas of Oaxaca state on the afternoon of May 30, local time. It was classified as a Category 2 hurricane before landfall. As it moved inland, it gradually weakened and dissipated on May 31. Oaxaca was the hardest hit, while the neighboring states of Chiapas, Veracruz and Yucatan were affected by heavy rainfall, but no casualties were reported.
Tropical cyclones usually strike the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Mexico between May and November each year. Mexico's National Weather Service is forecasting 30 to 40 tropical cyclones in the Pacific and Atlantic this year.
