What is the general range of tensile strength for silicone rubber products?
May 16, 2025
1.Ordinary silicone rubber products
Unfilled silicone rubber
The tensile strength of these silicone rubber products is relatively low, generally around 2-5 MPa. Because the interaction forces between its molecular chains are weak, there are no additional enhancing substances to increase the strength. For example, some soft silicone toys may have a tensile strength within this range, and they are mainly used in applications that do not require high strength.
Half filled silicone rubber
The tensile strength is usually between 5-10 MPa. Half filled silicone rubber is a type of basic silicone rubber that contains a certain amount of reinforcing filler, such as white carbon black. These fillers can interact with the molecular chains of silicone rubber to form a network structure, thereby improving tensile strength. Some simple silicone rubber sealing strips may use semi filled silicone rubber, whose strength can meet basic sealing and tensile requirements.
Highly filled silicone rubber
The tensile strength is generally around 10-15 MPa. High filling silicone rubber contains more reinforcing fillers, which can better enhance the tensile properties of silicone rubber. For example, in some industrial silicone rubber hoses, high filling silicone rubber is used to withstand certain pressure and tensile deformation, ensuring its stability and reliability during use.
2. Special silicone rubber products
High temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTV) products
The tensile strength can reach 15-20 MPa or even higher. High temperature vulcanized silicone rubber undergoes vulcanization reaction at high temperatures, forming a highly cross-linked network structure. This structure gives it high tensile strength and good heat resistance. In the field of electronic appliances, silicone rubber products used to package high-power electronic components often require high tensile strength to ensure the reliability of packaging, and high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber can meet this requirement.
Additive formed silicone rubber products
The tensile strength is generally between 5-15 MPa. Additive formed silicone rubber is vulcanized through the hydrosilylation reaction, which results in a more complete vulcanization reaction and better regularity of molecular chains, thus possessing better tensile properties. In some products that require certain transparency and tensile properties, such as transparent silicone rubber molds, adding molded silicone rubber is a commonly used choice.
3. Low strength silicone rubber products
Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) Products
The tensile strength is usually around 3-8 MPa. Liquid silicone rubber has good fluidity and is suitable for injection molding and other processes. In order to ensure its fluidity and demolding performance during the injection molding process, its formula is relatively soft and its tensile strength is relatively low. However, it has a wide range of applications that do not require particularly high strength but require high processing performance and appearance quality, such as baby pacifiers.
Medical silicone rubber products
To ensure good biocompatibility and flexibility, its tensile strength is generally between 2-5 MPa. For example, medical silicone rubber catheters need to be soft enough to avoid damage to human tissues, while also having a certain tensile strength to ensure their integrity during use.
