What are the difficulties in making high hardness silicone sealing rings?

Apr 24, 2025

The demand for various products in the silicone industry is very common among major industries, and the solid-state oil pressure process accounts for more than 50% of the silicone industry. The largest demand can also be said to be the solid-state molding process, which can achieve materials with different hardness levels. The hardness of the material also affects the normal use of the product. Some silicone often requires high hardness materials in daily life, and whether silicone sealing rings will cause product problems with high hardness has become a topic of concern for us.

There are indeed certain technical requirements for high hardness in the silicone product manufacturing industry. Firstly, it depends on whether the development structure of the mold has a certain impact on product vulcanization. Secondly, is the exhaust groove of the mold really pulled properly? And most importantly, can high hardness products meet your usage needs?

Some customers often want a hardness of around 60 degrees, but cannot distinguish between hardness and softness, so they can only guess, which affects the normal use function after using a hardness of 70 or 80 degrees. Some friends want a material with a hardness of 90 degrees, but verbally explain that only 70 or 80 degrees are enough. As a result, after the mold is opened, the hardness of the silicone cannot meet the requirements. Therefore, it is important to understand the hardness and softness of the product. The reason why the hardness and softness of silicone are divided into ± 5 degrees instead of ± 1 degrees is also due to its own reasons.

For high hardness silicone sealing rings, it is necessary to shorten the production time, lower the temperature, and try to reduce their processing hardness while retaining their intrinsic hardness. If the vulcanization time is too long, your sealing ring will be very brittle and easy to tear, so you need to pay more attention when using it. If your temperature is too high, the probability of edge and corner tearing of the product will increase, and the aging rate will gradually increase! So high hardness products still require certain processing skills during the manufacturing process. The main difficulty lies in the self disassembly edge of the mold and the exhaust groove. As long as the exhaust effect of the product can be obtained, there is basically no problem after adjustment on the machine.
