What is the difference between molded silicone and extruded silicone?

Sep 20, 2020

Silicone raw materials are mainly divided into two molding processes, one is high-temperature compression molding, and the other is high-temperature extrusion molding. We are usually divided into molded silicone and extruded silicone according to the production process, so do you know the difference between molded silicone and extruded silicone?

Molded silicone is mainly suitable for the production of silicone products with a certain size, shape, and length. Molded silica gel can be designed into products with a certain regular size by opening the mold, such as the silicone mobile phone shells, silicone seals, etc. that are often used in our lives. Products such as baby pacifiers are made of molded silicone.

The extruded silica gel is mainly suitable for the production of tube/strip-shaped silica gel products with unlimited length. The extruded silicone can be pre-formed by the extruder head and then cured in an oven to produce silicone products with unlimited length, such as our Silicone water pipes, silicone sealing strips and other products often used in daily life are all made of extruded silicone.

Of course, the raw materials of molded silicone and extruded silicone are roughly the same in composition, but the production process is different. Molded silica gel can be vulcanized by adding odorless vulcanizing agent or double-two penta vulcanizing agent. After cutting into strips, the strip/sheet-shaped silicone material is put into the machine and vulcanized at high temperature; while extruded silica gel is made by adding double two tetra vulcanizing agent Or after platinum vulcanizing agent, directly throw the whole piece of silica gel raw material into the rubber barrel and then extrude and vulcanize.

The molded silicone material can be stored for about one month after adding a vulcanizing agent, while the extruded silicone material can only be stored for about 3 days after adding a vulcanizing agent. If the two are not added with a vulcanizing agent, they can be effectively stored for a year.

In short, molded silica gel is suitable for silicone products with limited shapes and sizes, while extruded silica gel is suitable for silicone products with a certain shape and unlimited length. The daily output of molded silica gel is average, while the daily output of extruded silica gel is higher.
