The difference between a soft seal and a hard seal

Oct 13, 2020

There are usually two kinds of sealing ring, one is a hard seal, one is a soft seal. What is a hard seal and what is a soft seal?

The difference between a hard seal and a soft seal is largely in their choice of sealing material. The materials used in different sealing forms are also different. We can judge whether it is a hard seal or a soft seal by the sealing material.

There are mainly the following hard sealing materials:

1. Copper alloy, mainly used for low pressure valves

2. Chromium stainless steel, generally used in ordinary high pressure valves

3. Stellite alloy for high temperature and high pressure valves and valves with strong corrosion

4. Nickel-based alloys, mainly used in corrosive media.

Soft sealing material refers to the use of soft materials: such as rubber, silica gel, fluororubber, etc.Soft seal is actually in the valve gate on the package of rubber or silicone and other materials, there are also plenty of grooves in the valve body, the rubber or silicone sealing ring embedded in them, this is a soft seal. For example, elastic seat seal gate valves, elastic seat seal butterfly valves are soft seal valves.
